BUTLER COUNTY — The man suspected of jumping into a New Miami pond to elude authorities has been found and is now in custody.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office said Matthias Jones, 40, of New Miami, was arrested for breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony. He was booked Friday afternoon into the Butler County Jail, records show.

Jones was spotted fleeing a business in the 4000 block of Hamilton-Trenton Road after an alarm sounded there on Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office.

When deputies responded, a man later identified as Jones ran away, with deputies in pursuit on foot. Jones was last seen entering the water to avoid apprehension.

This led to first responders spending hours searching the water to find him, out of precaution, because believed he made it out safely.

Jones was found on Cain Avenue in the village of New Miami, law enforcement officials said.
